Sat Nav - Cracking open the case?
I would like to open my Navman case. Unfortunately it's battery seemed to have died and I am not willing to buy a new one, so will try swapping one - cosmetically I don't mind if it loks poor after the 'operation'. Any suggestions as to how to do this? I thought about using a dremel - a very small, high speed grinding wheel, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
I thought I'd answered this one - but it seems to have gone? Strange.
Anyway, I suggest removing all the screws on the back of the unit first. Check for any that are hidden under labels, or inside the battery compartment.
Some or all of these screws could be tamperproof, or Torx type, and need a special screwdriver.
Then, heat up the case of the sat nav with a hairdryer. When the unit is pretty warm (hot but not that you cant touch it), try prising apart the two halves of the case with your fingertips, or even a blunt ended instrument, such as the handle of a teaspoon. I use the rounded end of a pair of tweezers.
Heating up the plastic makes it less brittle, and less likely to snap or crack as you prise the two halves apart.
As always, be careful you dont hurt yourself, and remember that the LCD display on a sat nav is basically a thin piece of glass, and could be easily damaged .
Good luck !
